Onboard Ericsson 4, June 27, 2009, 0346 GMT – Leg 10
That’s it – the race is over and mission accomplished for us on Ericsson 4.
The caipirinhas have been finished, the wine bottles are dry and all but a few of the crew are asleep.
It was far from easy and we were pushed the whole way by our equals in every way. All the others crew should be giving themselves a HUGE pat on the back for a job well done! Tempers frayed and fun was had (at times!).
Now, for us, it’s time to enjoy the moment. All onboard shared some great and personal moments, but from now we will all go our separate ways. Some of us will sail together again, but I doubt we’ll be united on the same team - not through choice but through the way things unfold.
Personally it was a great experience for me - behind the camera and observing but also part of the dynamic of the team. The boys accepted me as an equal even though I was in an alien role for all of us.
We will all enjoy a few stories together at regattas in the future, there’s no doubt about that.
A massive thank you to all involved – shore team, supporters, competitors and organizers – but most of all loved ones (just for putting up with up with us - self centered, competitive boys in adult bodies).
So for now it’s a goodbye from me and from Ericsson 4. It’s been real. See you in three years … maybe?
